GIRLGUIDING SETS UP CAMP AT ALPHA
5 May 2006
The North East England Regional Office of Girlguiding UK, the UK's largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women with 600,000 members, has moved to new offices developed by the Monks Cross Partnership at Alpha at Monks Cross North business park in York.
Girlguiding North East England, which provides organisational backup for Rainbows, Brownies and Guides in the region, has acquired 2,500 sq ft ground floor office space at the new business park, which is located close to the York outer ring road. Alpha comprises seven office units, all of which have now been sold or let.
Jo Taylor, chief commissioner at Girlguiding North East England said: "Girlguiding is approaching its 100th anniversary in 2010 but has always been a very modern, forward thinking organisation. Our regional office, which manages the administrative and training functions that support our adult volunteers, need premises that are modern, spacious and easily accessible. The accommodation at Monks Cross North meets all our requirements."
Girlguiding North East England which employs seven staff at its headquarters and supports 60,000 members in the region, was previously located in a three-storey converted house at Heworth Green in York, which was built in the mid-1800s.
Jan Pamplin, region administrator said: "We have been in Heworth Green since 1971 but the design and layout of the property no longer met our needs. The new offices at Alpha provide around the same amount of floor space as we had before but are spread across one rather than three floors so we can make much better use of the space.
"Other reasons for our move to Alpha include our desire to have meeting and training rooms on-site, to be fully compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, to have on-site car parking as well as good access to York city centre. The new premises will help us to continue to provide an efficient and professional service to all our volunteers and members."
Richard Peak, director of property investment company The Helmsley Group and spokesperson for the Monks Cross Partnership said: "We developed Alpha speculatively and we are delighted that Girlguiding North East England has decided to join the other businesses at Monks Cross North, which are already benefiting from the high specification offices, excellent location and local amenities."
The next phase of development at the o60 million business park is the o1.7 million Omega development of six offices, which completely sold off plan last summer, before a brick had been laid. The Helmsley Group, which is currently based in the market town of Pocklington, is amongst the businesses moving to the Omega office scheme, which will be completed in July.
Richard Peak adds: "We have been committed to the success of Monks Cross North since day one and believe that it is the city's premier business park with current occupiers including Norwich Union Life, Garbutt & Elliott, Business Link York and North Yorkshire and now Girlguiding UK.
"Our growth and success over the past 25 years has meant that our current offices in Pocklington can no longer accommodate the 15-strong team so purpose-built offices at Monks Cross North will provide the solution."
The Helmsley Group has a property portfolio in excess of o100 million and is behind some of York's most prestigious new office developments located at Clifton Park, the University of York and the CPP building at Holgate Park. In addition, the group's activities include the conversion of the former probate office in Duncombe Place into luxury apartments and the current transformation of the scheduled ancient monument Lendal Tower in York into a mixed-use residential and restaurant scheme.
